Stripping Vent Help
Vol. 23 #1, May 1996

Water or steam stripping can be very effective for reducing volatiles, but, like so many things in life, too much of a good thing can be bad.

As the injected level gets higher than the typical 1/2 to 1%, significant cooling of the melt occurs. If the melt is not reheated prior to the vent, the additional water may cause an increase in volatiles. This can be detected using a thermocouple in the vent stack, which is a good idea for monitoring devolitilization anyway.
