Head Pressure
Vol.20 #1, Mar., 1993

No extruder should be allowed to run without a working head pressure indicator. It is very dangerous to do so. Aside from the inherent danger of blowing the head, without a pressure gauge, you are depriving yourself of the most useful information the operator of any extruder needs.

The head pressure is the pulse of the extruder. Any surging will show up as pressure fluctuation on the high stroke. A magnifying glass helps to see pressure fluctuations on analog gauges much better. "If the pressure fluctuates, however slight, the extruder is surging".
