Going out of Specification
Vol. 36 #1,

When an extrusion process goes out of specification, there is significant pressure to get back to target or steady state conditions quickly. In these crises, the immediate reaction may be to make multiple, simultaneous changes in attempt to get the process back in specification as quickly as possible. While this "fiddling with the knobs" may resolve the problem, we often do not understand the true cause and effect of each change has on the process. It is better to take a little more time and make one thoughtful change at a time.

This methodical approach might not reduce downtime time during the first event but it will pay dividends in future events and turn problems into learning opportunities.
