Troubleshooting
Vol. 31 #2, Fall 2004

In all extrusion processes, the paramount problem facing the technician/engineer is solving the daily challenges of processes that are out of control. “Out of control” signifies a process that manufactures product outside of normal product specifications. If the process originally defined that the capability to produce product with specifications, something in the process has changed. Granted, the longer the process runs segments of the extrusion process will deteriorate. Defining the process into three separate segments: the extruder, the sizing/cooling or product, and capstan or haul-off, each contributes to size control and consistency. Benchmarking the capability of each separate segment is critical in the primary development phase so that for future troubleshooting, facts are available.
