Feed Throats

Feed throat size and shape can have a significant effect on output and stability in a single screw extruder. In general, the smaller the hole, the more adverse the effect.
Sometimes, smaller feed holes can be compensated for by screw design, but more often, the feed hole geometry must be modified. Output rates have been observed to vary as much as 25% with the only variable being feed throat geometry. Naturally, materials that have poor flow, such as regrind, present the problems.
