When you have to check out a piece of electrical equipment such as a motor, controller, or heaters, and have an urge to touch the equipment, use the back of your hand to probe the object. The advantage of using the back of your hand is that it is more sensitive to thermal radiation, and, if the object is electrically hot, when you receive a shock and your muscles contract, your arm will pull away.
If you use your open palm and touch an electrically hot item and your muscles contract, then you will become "locked" onto the equipment.
