Purging (2)
Vol. 31 #2, Fall 2004

Do not run an extruder dry before introducing the purge resin. Running the ex- truder dry can result in overheating the polymer remaining in the extruder, since the mass of the incoming polymer is not sufficient to take away the heat. Over- heating can result in gel and other problems, particularly for thermally sensitive polymers. If necessary, cool the extruder down before introducing the next polymer.
