Purge Compound
Vol. 24 #2, Sept. 1997

An excellent purge compound for most resins is fractional melt HDPE, typically a bottle grade. If the barrel temperatures are set at about 400o F, the HDPE will push out almost any other resin. By using the fractional melt HDPE, the screw and die can easily be cleaned.

On the screw, the HDPE can easily be removed with a hand held wire brush. As far as cleaning the die, the HDPE has excellent melt strength and with the use of a pair of needle nose pliers and an air blow gun, the HDPE can be grabbed and pulled with the pliers while it is being cooled with the air blow gun.
