Extruding Amorphous Materials
Vol. 27 #1, March 2000
A hollow screw can make extrusion of amorphous materials more robust. If needed, the bore in the screw can be used for some screw cooling in the feed section to assist feeding. However, just the reduced heat flow from the melting section by virtue of the reduced screw cross section is often adequate to make feeding stable for some difficult to extrude amorphous polymers.
