Pull the Screw
Vol. 26 #2, September 1999 and Vol. 26 #3, December 1999
It is beneficial, especially for R&D and/or product changeovers, to pull screws and clean out the extruder. This makes sure that any residual polymer from previous operations isn’t remaining and might adversely impact the next run of a different polymer. These screws are usually pulled while they are hot from the extruder, so care must be taken to do this safely - recognizing hot parts, pinch points of moving parts, and handling of larger/heavier parts.
