Typically, if an extruder is purged with a fractional HDPE (.35 MI blowmolding grade) the screw will purge itself, approximately 90 95% clean.
Then as the screw is pushed out the remaining HDPE can be cleaned from the root of the screw with a wire brush, then Stearic Acid can be sprinkled onto the root and polished with copper gauze.
