Reinstalling a screw
Vol. 22 #3, Dec. 1995
When reinstalling a screw into the extruder barrel after a thorough cleaning or after a refurbishing job, make sure the feedthroat is free of pellets and the barrels are clean and hot.
Especially in the last 5 inches to the final fit, the forces to push the screw are increasing because the tighter fit in the stuffing box and the spline to the gearbox.
Loosening the clamping ring to the stuffing box, and putting grease on the spline, can make this a much easier task.
